Clay
Working in clay is as “old as dirt” and the medium of clay seems natural to
me as I am more of a process oriented artist and enjoy the tactile
experience. I do admire the pieces when they are finished but the creative
process is what brings them to life. Beginning with a lump of “mud” so to
speak and working within the parameters of what clay requires, along side
the creative process is a challenge I thoroughly enjoy and identify with.
Raku
I enjoy the basic process of working with clay, fire and water.
Removing the pieces from the kiln during the red hot glow is exhilarating
and exhausting at the same time, the rush of the fire and the vulnerability
of the pieces. The experience of doing Raku is much more intimate with the
whole firing process rather than the traditional electric kiln that I am
used to working with. Not knowing how the pieces will react to the heat
and the reduction is so much like life itself. There is a hidden beauty even
in some of the pieces that don’t turn out the way I want. Just the fact
that they have survived that kind of heat gives them a beauty all of their
own. I enjoy the unpredictability of the colors and not knowing exactly
where they will explode with color or cracks.
